The Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital is a 56-bed general medical and surgical hospital. Services offered at the hospital include obstetrics, psychiatry, and transitional care services. There are 17 physicians on the active staff of the hospital.  Physician's specialties include family practice, internal medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, otolaryngology, anesthesiology, and radiology. The average daily census of the hospital is approximately 30 patients.

The hospital primarily serves Alaska Native and American Indian citizens; however, it is open to all people. People residing in the community of Sitka need a referral from a private health practitioner unless they are otherwise entitled to services. The hospital is operated by the Southeast Alaska Regional Health consortium, a consortium of twenty Alaska Native tribes from throughout the region. In addition to the hospital, the consortium operates a community health program providing services in many villages throughout the region with its headquarters located just down the street from the hospital. The consortium is the largest employer in Sitka with approximately 335 employees at the hospital and approximately 75 employees at the community Health Services office building.

The consortium, with corporate offices in Juneau, also operates a medical/dental clinic in Juneau, a medical/dental clinic in Klawock, clinics in several of the smaller villages staffed by mid-level practitioners or community health aides. The consortium employees a total of approximately 675 people.
