HTML Help
I am interested in building a personal web site but I'm completely ignorant on where to start.  I am computer & internet literate but know nothing about creating web pages.  Please give me any information as to where I can go look.

Thank you,
Mike

Hey Mike-

Sure thing! Probably the very very best thing you can do for yourself is get an HTML editor.  That is what everone uses now anyways, and if they say they don't, they are either lying or taking way too much time doing their projects.  I personally use a rather hard nosed and expensive one called Allaire Studio, but another solid pick, especially for a beginner, is Microsoft Front Page.  For Macs, even though I have not personally tested them, the Adobe line of products has been reviewed over and over again very well.  (Very well over and over again? Oh well.)        Besides that, a quick search in Yahoo or AltaVista for 'HTML Tutorial' or 'Web Tutorial' will yield some nuggets, I am sure.  A really good site for a bit more advanced HTML is http://www.projectcool.com .     Don't bother buying a book on just HTML, instead, dabble, than buy a book on the specific aspect that you are having trouble with or are interested in.  In other words, if you want to use forms, and cgi in your webpage, get a book on that, rather than on HTML.  HTML guides are a dime a dozen on the web,  yoiu don't need to go any farther.  Look at how much you got with a simple question to me:)
And remember, young jedi, 'Use the source.'  When you find something you like, view source and see how it is done.  I realize this is getting tougher and tougher as pages get more complex.
Have fun storming the castle,
  Puffin

This is a problem stemming from the changeover. I will fix this immediately. One thing to be sure of is that you have 'change' permissions on the folders below your main folders. These problems come up when you try to delete or overwrite files on the server while telnetting or ftping.

Password Problems
Puffin Particle,

I would like to reconfirm our password on puffin.  We currently use "********".  Has this changed?? Please e-mail me @ someone@ptialaska.net and let me know if this password has changed.  We've had some problems getting in to make changes to our homepage.

No problem. I don't keep a record of your password lying around, but I will be happy to change the password of a user if they forget their password or otherwise need to change it. You will need to send me email from your puffin account, so that I may verify it is really you.

CGI-BIN
Hi
I have just recently tried to set up a message board (wwwboard). This isthe one from MATT'S  Script's Archive. http://www.worldwidemart.com/scripts/ I am running a macintosh (clone) system 7.6 and Fetch 3.0 to upload. My login is: bundyd I have never used cgi before and so I do not know what I am doing, or doing wrong. Here are the steps I followed without success. I created my cgi-bin within my public_html directory using Fetch but when I tried to set the cgi-bin folders permissions to 755 it gave me an error that the server could not understand "SITE CHMOD 755 cgi-bin"? So, I thought maybe the cgi-bin directory (folder) doesn't have to have its permissions set. I then uploaded the wwwboard.cgi into my cgi-bin and again tried to set the permissions to 755. I received the same response. Now I am very persist with trial and error and because the detailed instructions that came with wwwboard gives two ways of naming the file that goes into the cgi-bin I tried both wwwboard.pl and wwwboard.cgi and still it would not let me set any permissions. I edited the script step by step before trying any of this and I tried using the script without being able to set the permissions with both the file names (editing the cgi file as instructed for both names) and  all I got back was CGI ERROR and nothing more. It is very frustrating to not know at which point something is not right. I have currently deleted all the wwboard files and am ready to start over. Please get me started in the right direction. I have several cgi scripts I am wanting to try .
Please help me!

I feel so bad for poor bundyd. This one is really important. You can't set permissions on folders yourself like you can in a UNIX environment This usually doesn't mean much, as I have set the proper permissions for you so that people can read your webpages. However, for a proper cgi-bin directory to which you can allow people viewing your webpages to deposit information, I am going to have to set some permissions for you- so write me about it, and I will do so immediately.

Tide Tables
My husband has to put in his summer vacation bid by November 17th.  We would like to work out our schedule to include the clam tides at Ninilchik.  I have been unable to locate the 1998 Tide Table for the Kenai Peninsula.  Can you help us?

Ummm.... usually I don't answer questions like this, but I decided to do a search and see what I came up with. On a search for Kenai Tide Tables, the first hit was http://puffin.ptialaska.net/~vmdak! How about that? So I gave her Gary's email address and pointed her to his page.
